Devices Editor Overview

by
BMC Documentation

BMC 2.0 has a new UI for the editors, in BMC a "Device" is a piece of hardware controlled by BMC, for example a Button, an Encoder, a Display, a Relay etc.

Technically BMC also treats things like presets, setlist and other as "Devices" however for simplicty we'll stick to a Device being physical hardware.

BMC 2.0 has 3 distinct editors, an EVENTS Editor, a NAMES Editor and a DEVICES Editor, all devices share the same editor, this makes it a bit easier to get a hang on editing your devices, there are other smaller editors for things like settings but these are pretty easy to use.

Below you can see the BMC Device Editor Window, this is more or less going to be the same look for all devices, each device has it's own features, for example, the image below is a Button and buttons have a selection for a trigger (how the button is pressed will decide weather or not to trigger the event), leds instead will have an option for Solid or Flashing, pixels will have an option for Color, and so on.

  1. Name Selection: BMC has a names library, you can add strings for naming your devices (presets/layers included) and then using the device editor you can assign any of those names to any device, the same name will can be used by any device and multiple devices at the same time, keep in mind, when you edit a name assigned to any devices it will be changed for all devices that have it assigned.
  2. Name Editor: Opens the mini name editor to edit the selected name, a popup will open up allowing you to make changes to the name.
  3. Event: In BMC 2.0 you drag and drop events from the event's list (6) into an empty event drop zone (4). Events can be edited here directly by clicking the edit button on the event, you can also remove the event from the drop zone by dragging it back to the list (6) or by clicking the trash can icon on the event.
  4. Event Drop Zone: this is where you drop events from the event's list.
  5. Device Scroller: this buttons allow you to go thru all your devices of the same type, in this case the editor is showing button # 7 if i click the right arrow it will take my to edit button # 8, clicking the left arrow takes me to button # 6, this scrolling is based on the device index not how they are laidout on the Layout.
  6. Event List: this is where all your events are listed, you can drag and drop them into event drop zones (4) and you can edit them directly in the list, a popup editor will appear. you can also search thru events and filter them to display different Categories of event that you've created.
  7. Event/Device List: you can switch from displaying the events list or displaying a list of all devices of the same type, in this case since this is a button, if i click on "other buttons" the list will display all other buttons compiled, click on any of them to access that specific button.
  8. Layer Switching: this will appear when you edit layer devices, clicking the arrows will scroll to the next/previous layer while keeping the editor open. In BMC the devices editor will edit the devices in the current layer, with these buttons you can edit that same device across any layer.
  9. MidiTool: This button will open MidiTool (a midi monitor built into BMC) use this to check if midi messages were sent as intended.
  10. Back Button: This button will appear on merged devices, in this case this button is merged with an led, clicking this button will take you back to select between editing the button or the led.
  11. Merge Switch: This buttons will appear on merged devices, use them to switch between the 2 merged devices, this allows you to skip (10), going back a selecting the other merged device.
  12. Clipboard: Use this to copy and paste a device, you can only copy/paste between devices of the same type, that is Buttons with Buttons, leds with leds, pixels with pixels, etc.
  13. Local Shortcuts: These enable/disable some features on your local copy of the editor. Click the "?" for info on what each one does.
  14. Save Buttons: When editing layer devices the "Save to all Layers" button will appear, clicking on it will save all changes to this device across all layers. This only applies to the current device you are editing.
